Culture, Inclusion and Community: A Day with Utugi Angels

Pageant of Heritage National Team had the priviledge of conducting a community outreach visit to Utugi Angels Community, a safe house for boys with disabilities located in the heart of Kiambu County. The visit was a powerful reminder of how culture, compassion and community can come together to transform lives.

In attendance were key stakeholders including officials from the department of children services, social development, local administration, community leaders, the leadership of Utugi Angels Community and dedicated local partners. Their presence highlighted the shared commitment to inclusive development and safeguarding the rights of children living with disabilities.

Utugi Angels serves as more than just a safe shelter, it is a space of hope, healing and empowerment. Boys here are nurtured through holistic programs that include therapy, vocational training and life skills education. Our team was warmly received with cheerful performances by the boys, showcasing not only their talents but also their resilience and joy inspite of their challenges.

During the visit, traditional songs and dances created moments of deep connection transending verbal communication and societal labels. These cultural expressions reminded us all that every child regardless of ability has a voice and a story that deserves to be heard.

In many communities, outdated beliefs and cultural misconceptions have contributed to the marginalization of persons with disbilities. It is , therefore essential that we use our platforms especially in heritage and pageantry to demystify stigma and create safe inclusive spaces where all individuals are valued. Through initiatives like this outreach, the organization is actively reshaping narratives, ensuring that our cultural identity includes and uplifts persons with disabilities. True heritage is inclusive and our beauty as a people is found in our diversity.

Let this outreach be a call to action: disability inclusion must be mainstreamed in all areas of development, including education, culture, health and community leadership. As we champion our rich cultural heritage ,let us ensure no one is left behind.

At the heart of our Kenyan heritage lies Ubuntu the belief that "I am because We are." It is with this spirit that we continue to stand in solidarity with communities like Utugi Angels and work towards a more inclusive and compassionate society.
